Jeremiah 2:13 “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me– the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!” – NLT
From the time of the fall, man sought independence from God. Satan’s strategy remains to alleniate humanity from his Creator, and in so doing, fall prey to the devil’s tricks and manipulations as alternatives because we can’t be independent. Man was created to depend on God. When we are cut off from Him, we die. Pride drives towards independence so that credit is not shared or given to another.
Israel went into the same deception. They ignored God, their Creator, protector, sustainer, guide and life giver and sought to devise their own means of survival, protection and independent living. They wanted to sustain life without God. That was like building cracked cisterns which could not hold water. It was wasted useless efforts. God called these two evils His people committed against Him; abandoning God and building what couldn’t sustain them.
To date, this remains man’s problem. People can do everything else to find solutions to their problems, except turn to God. To many, God is the last resort or never at all. We end up finding solutions that don’t last for the problems we face. Our cisterns(efforts) are broken, but we insist on them even if they don’t help. The world problems would easily find answers if God retained His place in mens hearts, policy and board rooms, legislative assemblies, council sessions. But as it is, men will still dig their cisterns which can’t hold water. If only we could return to the Almighty, it would be much easier!
2 Kings 17:15 “They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.””
Shalom children of God.
