In step with the Spirit

By Pastor Dr. Aggrey Soyekwo

Galatians 5:16-17 "What I say is this: let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature. For what our human nature wants is opposed to what the Spirit wants, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants. These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do." - GNB

The greatest battles we have are never external, but within. Paul highlights the battle between the desires of the human nature and the Spirit of God within a person. They are in opposition to each other. The human nature tends towards evil and easily manipulated by the devil. But the Holy Spirit in the renewed human spirit leads towards holiness and righteousness. The two are contrary.

This battle is only won by the help of the Holy Spirit. Submission to, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us, is the surest way to overcome the driving force of the sinful nature. The law is not effective in eradicating evil. It may reduce physical incidents, but at the slightest opportunity, people will do it, because it is a heart matter. Neither can good works and personal attempts help. We are unable to overcome sin without the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit works with our corporation. We have to choose to obey and allow His leading and remain instep with Him. This means a constant communion. Unfortunately, some grief Him away through disobedience and rebellious attitudes. Let’s learn to obediently respond and embrace His ways.

Ephesians 4:30 "And do not make God's Holy Spirit sad; for the Spirit is God's mark of ownership on you, a guarantee that the Day will come when God will set you free."
