Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Sharp words of rebuke! It was after the long sermon on the mountain that Jesus spoke these words. So many had heard His word. Some acknowledged Him as Lord. But they didn’t do what He taught them. They continued living in disobedience and their self styled godliness.
Today, so many outwardly claim to be His followers, go to church, participate in ministry, pray, worship and call on His name. But the fruit of their lives shows that Jesus is not truly Lord in their lives. They practice their faith on their terms and conditions, not as the Master Jesus taught. Jesus rebuked the Laodicean church for setting their own standard in the faith. They had locked the Jesus they claimed to serve outside, and He was knocking the door to come in (Rev 3:20).
Friends, let’s watch our ways. We live and are guided by the word of God, not our own ways. People have created their own doctrines, including demonic false teachings and use them to define their stand with God. Jesus expects that those who call Him Lord, Lord should do what He says. That will be the standard of judgement when we appear before Him.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" Matthew 7:21-23
