The deception of knowledge

By Pastor Dr. Aggrey Soyekwo

1 Corinthians 8:1-2 "Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know." - NIV

Knowledge is information, understanding or a skill one acquires through education or experience. As we learn ,we acquire knowledge. This knowledge has an effect in the lives and behaviours of its possessor. Paul compares the behavior of those possessed with knowledge and those driven by love. He notes that knowledge puffs up, while love builds up.

Knowledge is certainly good and very important in guiding life decisions. We need to invest in knowledge acquisition. But it becomes deceptive when those who have it use it to manipulate, trick, despise or abuse others less knowledgeable than themselves. It is destructive when it makes people see themselves as more important than others, become full of themselves, hold others hostage and think everything should revolve around them. That’s pride and arrogance.

We can never know everything in the world. We only know in part, even if you are a genius. This should keep us humble and to always be willing to purposefully learn from others. There is no end to learning. If driven by genuine love for others, we will be humble enough to listen respectfully to them, even if they make little sense. Love and right use of knowledge builds others up.

Proverbs 12:15 "The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice."
